Overview
Research summary
Open WebUI is a self-hosted web interface for conversations and workflows using local Ollama models or OpenAI-compatible APIs. It adds multi-user controls, groups, knowledge and document retrieval, tools, MCP connections and extensibility beyond a simple chat client. It can operate offline with an appropriate local model backend, but the web interface itself should not be confused with an embedded inference engine.
Its current source is covered by the Open WebUI License, which restricts removal or alteration of branding above a fifty-user threshold unless permission or an enterprise license is obtained. Earlier contributions retain their historical MIT or BSD-3-Clause terms, according to the repository's multi-license notice.
