Overview

Research summary

Atomic Chat runs open-weight language models on the user's machine and exposes them through a local OpenAI-compatible API so coding agents and other clients can use the loaded model. Its desktop app combines conversations, model management, custom assistants and MCP connections with local inference backends based on llama.cpp and MLX. Cloud providers are optional, so its offline and privacy claims apply to locally run models rather than every provider configuration.

The project states that it began as a fork of Jan; the two now have separate repositories and product direction. Its local server binds to loopback by default, with an option to expose it on a network.
