Research summary
LangChain is a Python framework for building agents and LLM-powered applications from interoperable model, tool, retrieval and middleware components. Its core value is the integration and abstraction layer: applications can use a common interface across model providers, tools, vector stores and retrievers while composing those pieces into agent loops or ordinary application code. The current project positions LangChain as the higher-level framework in a broader ecosystem: developers can use LangGraph when they need lower-level control over durable state and orchestration, and Deep Agents when they want more batteries-included planning, filesystem and subagent behavior.
LangChain is therefore broader than a coding agent and should be evaluated as application infrastructure. The Python repository is MIT licensed; LangChain.js is maintained separately, while LangSmith and managed deployment services are commercial products with their own terms.
