Research summary

DeepAgents is an opinionated TypeScript library for building agents that need more execution structure than a basic tool-calling loop. createDeepAgent returns a compiled LangGraph graph, retaining LangGraph facilities such as streaming and checkpointers while adding middleware and defaults for file tools, context management, and delegation. Its virtual filesystem can use in-memory state, local disk, LangGraph storage, composite routing, or custom backends; declarative path permissions can limit built-in reads and writes. Custom LangChain tools and MCP tools can be attached, and sandbox backends optionally add isolated shell execution.

Subagents run delegated tasks in separate context windows, with typed streams for their messages and tool calls. Skills, AGENTS.md-based memory, summarization, context offloading, and human interrupts are available, while structured task planning is opt-in rather than universally enabled. Permissions on filesystem tools do not constrain arbitrary commands exposed by a sandbox backend, so enforcement must also occur at the backend or tool boundary.

The package is provider-agnostic for tool-calling chat models and is MIT-licensed open source.
