AI chat apps

Jan

Offline-capable local chat and API in one desktop app; upstream project for Atomic Chat.

44,618 stars

Overview

Research summary

Jan is a desktop application for downloading and chatting with open-weight language models on a user's own computer. It bundles a local inference path and exposes an OpenAI-compatible server, making the same models available to other applications as well as to its chat interface. Users may instead connect cloud model providers, create custom assistants and use MCP integrations; local privacy therefore depends on the selected model and provider.

The project offers Windows, macOS and Linux builds and publishes its application source. Atomic Chat identifies Jan as the upstream project from which it began, so the two entries are related by lineage as well as overlapping capabilities.
