Overview

Research summary

This entry primarily represents GitHub Copilot CLI, the terminal interface to GitHub's Copilot coding agent. It supports an interactive conversational interface and a programmatic prompt mode for scripts and automation. The agent can inspect and modify repositories, run commands, plan multi-step work before editing, explain or debug code, and interact with GitHub.com to inspect issues and pull requests or create a pull request on the user's behalf.

Custom instructions, agents, skills, hooks, MCP servers, and repository memory can extend its behavior. Tool execution is permission-controlled: users may approve individual actions, establish scoped allow or deny rules, or enable broader automatic execution. GitHub cautions that broad approval grants the agent the user's local access, and its permission scoping is not a guaranteed security boundary; sandboxed or isolated execution is recommended for higher-risk automation.

The CLI can also act as an ACP agent server. Although its distribution repository is public, the code is covered by GitHub's custom Copilot CLI license, which prohibits modification and tightly limits redistribution. Access to the associated services may separately require an account or subscription.
