Spec Kit

A vendor-neutral, artifact-first SDD process harness with broad coding-agent integrations and an extensible workflow, preset and extension model.

Overview

Research summary

Spec Kit is GitHub's open-source process toolkit for driving AI coding agents from explicit intent rather than ad-hoc prompts. Its core SDD workflow turns a feature into a specification, implementation plan, task breakdown, implementation run and convergence pass, with a project constitution plus optional clarification, checklist and cross-artifact analysis steps. Artifacts remain in the repository as Markdown context for later stages.

The specify Python CLI initializes and updates the workflow and supports a broad range of coding-agent integrations, while extensions, presets, workflows and bundles let teams adapt the process or package governance rules. Spec Kit also includes separate bug-fixing and idea-assessment processes, so the project has evolved from a fixed sequence into a broader extensible process harness. The implementation is public Python source under MIT.
