Overview

Research summary

VT Code treats the model as a reasoning component inside a broader runtime that owns tools, context, policy, sandboxing, state, evaluation, and verification. It supports an interactive TUI, one-shot questions, headless tasks, and review workflows. Durable sessions include task tracking, output spooling, checkpoints, compaction, resumable handoffs, and trajectory export; an authoritative ThreadEvent contract provides the basis for replay, archives, and memory views.

Security features include command policies, workspace approval, sandboxed shells, isolated worktrees, and fail-closed checks intended to reduce prompt-injection, path-escape, symlink, and environment-leakage risks. MCP, ACP, Skills, plugins, A2A, WebMCP, Open Responses, and ATIF integrations extend the harness without requiring core forks. It supports hosted providers, OpenAI-compatible gateways, and experimental local backends.

Upstream explicitly labels local inference and some automation paths experimental. Licensing is revision-sensitive: the catalog records its pinned v0.96.14 artifact as MIT and the then-current main branch as Apache-2.0, while the current upstream README states that first-party code is dual-licensed MIT OR Apache-2.0. Consumers should verify the selected revision.
