Research summary
SWE-agent takes a repository task such as a GitHub issue, lets a language model inspect and modify the codebase through a purpose-built agent-computer interface, and can run validation before producing a patch. Its strong research orientation, reproducible trajectories and close relationship with SWE-bench make it particularly useful as a reference implementation for measuring how runtime/tool design affects software-engineering performance.
Its agent-computer interface is deliberately treated as part of the research problem: command vocabulary, observations and editing ergonomics can materially change benchmark results even when the underlying model is unchanged. The project also records trajectories that make failures inspectable rather than reducing an evaluation to a final pass/fail score. That combination makes SWE-agent useful for studying tool design, reproducibility, environment setup and evaluation methodology separately from product UI concerns.
