Research summary
Surya extracts text and document structure from images and documents using learned models. Its current toolkit includes multilingual OCR, layout analysis, reading order and table recognition, together with smaller components for text detection and OCR error detection. Developers can integrate its Python predictors or command-line tools into document processing workflows where plain text extraction loses spatial structure.
It is maintained by Datalab and is also used within document conversion systems. Code is Apache-2.0; model weights use a modified OpenRAIL-M license with commercial eligibility limits, so the code license does not describe all deployed assets.
