Overview
Research summary
Roo Code extended the Cline-style IDE agent model with configurable modes, multiple providers, file and command tools, MCP servers, browser interactions and permission controls. It became a widely used reference for agentic VS Code workflows and inspired or fed later forks. The upstream repository is now archived and read-only, so the catalog treats it as a historical implementation reference rather than an actively maintained recommendation.
Roo Code is also useful historically because many later IDE agents inherited similar concepts: named modes, per-tool approvals, provider abstraction and MCP servers exposed through an editor-centric control surface. Studying an archived implementation can show which responsibilities accumulated in the extension layer and which later projects moved into standalone runtimes. Its archived status should therefore be interpreted as a maintenance signal, not as evidence that the architectural ideas are irrelevant.
