Speech, vision & media
Piper
Local synthesis with a native engine and integrations aimed at devices and offline applications.
Overview
Research summary
Piper generates speech locally from text using downloadable voices and embedded espeak-ng phonemization. The current Open Home Foundation repository exposes a command-line interface, Python API, HTTP server and native C/C++ integration, along with documentation for training new voices. It is suitable for assistants, accessibility applications and other systems that need synthesis without sending text to a hosted provider.
This entry follows piper1-gpl, rather than the older archived implementation lineage. The engine uses GPL-3.0, and individual voice model cards can impose separate license requirements. Hardware and voice choice influence synthesis performance.
