Overview

Research summary

Pi Coding Agent is a minimal terminal harness intended to be adapted rather than a feature-heavy fixed workflow. Its built-in coding loop exposes file reading, editing and writing, Bash execution, model selection, and session management. Users can work through the interactive terminal interface, emit text or structured JSON for scripts, integrate non-Node clients through a JSONL RPC protocol over standard input and output, or embed the agent through its Node.js SDK.

Sessions are stored as trees, allowing navigation to an earlier point and continuation on a new branch within one history file; exports, sharing, automatic compaction, and branch summaries support longer work. TypeScript extensions can add tools, commands, events, providers, UI elements, context processing, and policy behavior. Skills, prompt templates, themes, and installable Pi packages provide other reusable customization layers.

The deliberate limitation is that features such as subagents, plan mode, MCP integration, permission gates, and sandboxing are not mandatory built-ins; examples or third-party packages can implement them, so their guarantees depend on the installed extension. The TypeScript coding-agent package is MIT-licensed source. This entry is the actual Pi agent and should not be confused with the separately cataloged community pi-acp protocol adapter.
