Data & context

pgvector

Vector retrieval inside PostgreSQL without introducing a separate database engine.

Overview

Research summary

pgvector extends PostgreSQL with vector types, distance operators and similarity-search indexes. Applications can keep embeddings beside relational records and combine retrieval with SQL filters, joins and transactions. It supports exact nearest-neighbor queries and approximate HNSW or IVFFlat indexes with different speed, recall and memory tradeoffs. pgvector does not generate embeddings or run language models; those components are supplied separately. The C extension uses the PostgreSQL License and requires a compatible PostgreSQL installation or a hosted provider that supports the extension.
