Overview
Research summary
OpenSpec is a lightweight agreement layer between developers and coding agents. The repository keeps current behavioral specifications under openspec/specs/ as the source of truth, while each proposed change gets its own artifact set containing a proposal, spec deltas, optional design and implementation tasks. That delta model makes brownfield work first-class: a team can describe what changes without restating the entire system, then archive accepted deltas back into the canonical specs.
The current artifact-guided workflow is dependency-based rather than rigidly waterfall, and schemas can be forked or customized for team-specific processes. The TypeScript CLI installs and updates agent instructions and works across existing coding assistants instead of requiring a dedicated IDE. The project is public MIT-licensed source.
