Agent management

OpenHands Agent Canvas

Self-hosted control center for OpenHands and third-party coding agents across local, Docker and remote backends. It combines a browser interface with scheduled and event-driven automations, rather than limiting the workflow to a terminal chat session.

Overview

Research summary

OpenHands Agent Canvas is the browser-facing control center in the current OpenHands architecture, rather than the coding-agent runtime itself. It starts and manages conversations across OpenHands, Claude Code, Codex, Gemini, and other ACP-compatible agents, and can connect to multiple local, Docker, virtual-machine, remote, Cloud, or Enterprise backends. The launcher can run Canvas with local services as an all-in-one stack, or the frontend can connect to separately deployed infrastructure.

Underneath the UI, a browser-compatible TypeScript client communicates with Agent Server through REST and WebSocket APIs. Agent Server and the agents, tools, conversations, workspaces, and execution semantics come from the separate Python Software Agent SDK repository. A separate Automation Server supplies schedules, webhook-triggered runs, dispatch, and run history for workflows integrating systems such as GitHub, Slack, Linear, or Notion.

This component separation matters for deployment and licensing: MIT covers the Agent Canvas repository, while OpenHands Enterprise is a separate commercially licensed offering and connected third-party agents retain their own terms. Execution safety also depends on the selected backend and sandbox configuration; Canvas can launch without a sandbox or use isolated environments, so self-hosting alone does not imply containment.
