Overview
Research summary
The current Open Interpreter is a Rust coding agent built from the Codex architecture rather than the earlier Python-only product. Its harness layer can switch among native, Claude Code, Kimi, Qwen, SWE-agent and minimal-style prompting/tool conventions so the same model can be evaluated under different agent behaviors. It supports commands, edits, MCP, skills, hooks, permissions, ACP-compatible clients and Codex SDK compatibility, with hosted or OpenAI-compatible model providers selected independently.
Architecturally, it is especially useful for comparing what Codex treats as core runtime behavior with the compatibility layers Open Interpreter adds around it. Harness selection, sandbox policy, provider configuration and tool behavior remain separable concerns. That separation makes the repository valuable for experiments in which the same model is run under different agent protocols or the same harness is evaluated across local and hosted models without redesigning the execution loop.
