Overview

Research summary

MCP Toolbox provides a server-side layer for connecting AI applications to databases through defined tools. Operators configure database sources and permitted operations centrally, and compatible clients or SDKs load those tools rather than embedding every connector detail directly into an agent. The project was previously known as genai-toolbox and includes support for multiple database systems and integration environments.

It is an MCP integration server, not a replacement for the database or the agent that chooses when to call a tool. Deployment must account for database privileges, authentication, allowed query behavior, and the sensitivity of returned data. Centralizing tool definitions can support consistent access patterns, but does not remove the need to review them.

The implementation is Go and Apache 2.0 licensed; the separate Go SDK represents the client side of this architecture.
