Research summary
The official MCP Registry is a community-developed service for publishing and discovering metadata about Model Context Protocol servers. Publishers describe server packages or remote endpoints, and aggregators can consume registry data through its API to build curated discovery experiences. Registration supplies provenance and structured distribution information, not a guarantee that a listed server is safe or suitable for a particular deployment.
The public implementation is written in Go. Its code is undergoing a documented MIT-to-Apache-2.0 licensing transition, with previously unconsented contributions retaining MIT terms and non-specification documentation under CC-BY-4.0.
