Observability & evaluation

mcp-assert

Exercises real MCP transports with deterministic assertions and fuzzing, without requiring a model to grade results.

Overview

Research summary

mcp-assert is a Go test runner for servers implementing the Model Context Protocol. It connects over stdio, SSE or HTTP, performs the initialization handshake, discovers tools and checks their responses against YAML assertions. Developers can generate starting suites, capture snapshots, run schema linting and fuzz tool arguments to find crashes or invalid error handling.

CI integrations produce structured results and support regression comparisons, while adapters allow existing test frameworks to reuse the same suites. Its focus is deterministic protocol and output checks, so passing a suite establishes only the behavior that was exercised; it is not a guarantee of compatibility with every client or of semantic answer quality. The implementation is MIT licensed.
