Overview

Research summary

Kiro is a proprietary development platform built around specification-driven work rather than only conversational code generation. Feature specifications progress through structured requirements, a technical design, and discrete implementation tasks stored as project artifacts; bug-fix specifications provide a related path for diagnosis, repair, and regression prevention. When running a task set, Kiro derives dependencies and executes independent tasks concurrently in waves while preserving sequential constraints.

The agent is available through an IDE, terminal CLI, web interface, and mobile workflows. Local surfaces support interactive development, while the headless CLI can participate in scripts and CI/CD; web sessions can delegate work to isolated cloud environments. Project steering, custom agents, skills, hooks, MCP connections, permissions, ignored paths, checkpoints, and rewind controls shape execution and review.

The CLI can also expose the Kiro agent through ACP to compatible clients. Availability and exact capabilities differ among surfaces and account plans, particularly for hosted execution. The public kirodotdev/Kiro repository is explicitly an issue and feedback tracker with triage automation, not the product implementation.

It therefore does not establish an open-source license or reveal the core implementation language; the Kiro product remains proprietary despite its use of open interoperability formats and protocols.
