Research summary
Kimi CLI is a Python terminal agent for software-development tasks and general command-line operations. It can inspect and edit code, execute commands, search or fetch web pages, and revise its plan while a task runs. A dedicated shell mode lets users issue ordinary commands without leaving the interface, although the documentation notes that shell built-ins such as cd are not supported there.
MCP configuration supports stdio and HTTP servers, including OAuth-based services and ad hoc configuration files. The kimi acp command exposes a multi-session ACP server for compatible editors and other clients; authentication must first be completed through the terminal. A VS Code extension and optional Zsh integration provide additional interfaces around the same workflow.
The implementation is open source under Apache-2.0, not merely an adapter to a closed agent. However, Moonshot's official README states that this project is evolving into Kimi Code CLI and will be gradually wound down; the successor can migrate existing configuration and sessions.
