Overview
Research summary
Kimchi combines an open-source terminal harness with Kimchi-hosted model and metadata services. The CLI reads and modifies files, runs commands, and can operate in either single-model mode or a role-based multi-model mode. In multi-model operation, an orchestrator classifies work and delegates planning, building, review, exploration, and research to configured model pools; review runs in a separate context to preserve independence.
Users can customize role assignments and metadata for external models, while phase and model tags support usage attribution. The Ferment workflow adds persistent plans and checkpoints for multi-session projects, including staged execution and evaluation. Other documented capabilities include subagents, MCP migration and configuration, language-server-assisted navigation, and handoff of active sessions to remote workspaces.
The TypeScript CLI is built on the pi-mono coding-agent SDK and published under Apache-2.0. It should still be distinguished from Kimchi's hosted inference, metadata, governance, and remote-workspace services, whose deployment and service terms are not established by the CLI repository's license.
