Research summary
jOpenAgent represents agents as Java classes whose fields hold state and whose methods provide deterministic capabilities or delegate work to a language model. The harness binds model results to declared Java types, retries invalid structured output and offers prediction, tool-calling, reflection and code-as-action strategies. Its built-in facilities cover conversation history, memory, skills, MCP connections, tracing and evaluation.
Applications can connect Anthropic, OpenAI or compatible local endpoints. The library has no runtime Maven dependencies beyond the JDK. Its optional code-as-action mode executes model-generated Java through JShell, so applications need to choose and assess the execution isolation appropriate to their deployment.
