Research summary
Haystack is an Apache-2.0 Python orchestration framework for production LLM applications. Its component-and-pipeline model lets developers explicitly connect retrieval, routing, generation, memory, tools and application logic instead of hiding the whole system inside one conversational agent loop. Current Haystack releases also support agent workflows, lifecycle hooks and multi-agent patterns, while retaining the retrieval and RAG capabilities for which the project became well known.
This makes it useful both for deterministic pipelines with selected model steps and for more autonomous agents that still need observable control flow. Components can integrate different model providers, document stores and external services, so the open framework does not impose one hosted AI backend. Deepset also offers commercial platform and support products; those services are separate from the Apache-2.0 license of the core Haystack repository.
