Research summary
Gemini CLI is Google's open-source TypeScript terminal agent for interactive coding and non-interactive automation. It can inspect and edit repository files, run shell commands, fetch web content, and ground answers with Google Search; multimodal prompts also support work from images or PDFs. Project instructions can be supplied through GEMINI.md files, while checkpointing preserves resumable session state.
Its extension model combines built-in tools with MCP servers and packaged extensions, and headless output makes it usable in scripts or CI. Sandboxing and approval policies can constrain tool execution, but the agent still operates on local files and commands and should be configured according to repository trust. The implementation is published under Apache-2.0, rather than merely exposing an adapter.
Google's current documentation also states that Gemini CLI access for unpaid-tier and Google One users transitioned to Antigravity CLI, so availability and authentication paths depend on the account plan.
