FastMCP

Python-first application framework that handles MCP protocol mechanics around ordinary functions and client code.

Overview

Research summary

FastMCP provides a high-level Python framework for exposing tools, resources, and prompts through Model Context Protocol, and for writing clients that call MCP servers. Developers define application functions while the framework manages schema generation, validation, transport negotiation, authentication integration, and protocol lifecycle. It also supports interactive MCP applications.

The standalone project is maintained by Prefect, and its original implementation was incorporated into the official Python SDK; the continuing standalone framework is a distinct project. This entry covers the Apache-2.0 Python repository, keeping Prefect's separately hosted services and the TypeScript counterpart outside its implementation and license scope.
