Overview
Research summary
fast-agent is both a usable CLI coding agent and a Python toolkit for defining, running, evaluating, and composing agents. Its terminal workflow can expose shell tools, load skills, connect MCP servers over local or remote transports, and switch among hosted or local model providers. Python decorators and configuration define agents and reusable workflows; built-in patterns include sequential chains, parallel fan-out and fan-in, evaluator-optimizer loops, LLM routers, orchestrators, iterative planners, voting-based MAKER workflows, and agents exposed as tools.
The framework can request human input and supports multimodal and structured outputs. ACP mode presents configured agents as client-selectable modes and carries streaming, cancellation, plans, progress notifications, sessions, client filesystem or terminal access, and client-supplied MCP servers into compatible editors. The same ecosystem also supports MCP deployment and Agent2Agent integration, making it broader than a single conversational coding loop.
Capability depends on the configured model, credentials, servers, and enabled execution tools; automation requires explicit model configuration. The implementation is public Python source under Apache-2.0.
