Dirac

Research summary

Dirac is an open-source TypeScript coding agent, forked from Cline, for VS Code, command-line, and ACP-compatible editor workflows. Its editing protocol uses stable hash anchors to identify source ranges without repeating large search-and-replace blocks; syntax-tree tools can inspect definitions and references or perform structural operations such as symbol renames. Independent reads, searches, edits, and commands can be batched in one model turn.

Concurrent subagents may receive separate prompts, tools, timeouts, and inherited context, while freshness checks reject edits based on stale source. The runtime also supports mid-task steering, resumable task IDs, checkpoints, path-aware instructions, skills, hooks, and configurable approval policies. A separate utility model can handle context compaction, handoffs, commit messages, or first-pass permission decisions, but automatic approvals remain policy-driven model decisions and are recorded for review.

Users provide or select model-provider credentials; configuration follows Dirac across interfaces. Optional completion verification is a model pass, not a replacement for tests or human review. The public repository contains the implementation under Apache-2.0.
