Early open-source autonomous software engineer centered on turning high-level objectives into planned implementation work.

Overview

Research summary

Devika is designed around the autonomous-software-engineer pattern: a user supplies a higher-level objective and the system performs planning, research, code generation and iterative execution rather than limiting itself to inline completion. Its architecture is useful as an earlier open implementation of the end-to-end autonomous coding-agent concept, even where newer runtimes have since adopted more explicit sandboxing and protocol boundaries.

Although its architecture predates several newer coding-agent conventions, it remains informative for the decomposition from a broad request into browsing, planning and implementation phases. It demonstrates both the appeal and the operational complexity of attempting an end-to-end autonomous developer in one product. Comparing it with newer, narrower runtimes helps identify which responsibilities belong in deterministic orchestration, which require dedicated tools, and which are better left to an LLM-driven agent step.
