Coding agents
Cursor
Runs Cursor's agent outside the Cursor editor while retaining agent/plan/ask modes, permission requests and project MCP configuration.
Overview
Research summary
Cursor's CLI exposes the same core agent modes as its editor: Agent mode can use the full tool set, Plan mode develops an approach with clarifying questions, and Ask mode explores the codebase without modifying it. The agent can operate on files, search code, run shell commands, fetch web content, use project rules, and attach MCP servers. Interactive sessions support change review and command approval; print mode supports scripting and CI, but documentation warns that it has write access, so allow and deny rules for shell, reads, writes, web fetches, and MCP tools remain important.
Sessions can be listed and resumed, temporary Git worktrees can isolate edits, and a conversation can be handed to Cursor Cloud Agent for continued execution. The agent acp command exposes the proprietary agent over stdio using JSON-RPC, with streamed updates, permission requests, session loading, and Cursor-specific planning or subagent notifications. Team-level MCP servers are not supported in ACP mode.
Cursor's public GitHub repository is a small feedback and tracker repository, not the core product source, so it does not establish the runtime's implementation language or an open-source license.
