Overview

Research summary

Codex CLI is OpenAI's local coding agent and the open-source component represented by the openai/codex repository. From a terminal session it can explore an unfamiliar repository, plan and implement changes, run local development commands, explain or debug code, and perform a dedicated review of working-tree, commit, or branch differences without modifying them. Sessions can be resumed, prompts can include images, and larger investigations can be delegated to focused subagents.

MCP servers provide external tools, while non-interactive execution supports repeatable scripts and CI-oriented workflows. Codex can also submit work to configured Codex cloud environments and later apply the result locally; those hosted services are distinct from the repository's Apache-2.0 CLI code. Local command execution is constrained by an OS-enforced sandbox and a separate approval policy.

Default configurations generally limit writes to the active workspace and disable command network access, with approval required for broader operations. Users can select read-only or less restricted modes, including disabling prompts, but full-access execution intentionally removes important safeguards. The implementation is primarily Rust, and an SDK is available for embedding the agent runtime in other applications.
