CodeWhale

Rust-native agent runtime combining local/hosted model choice, permission modes and role/model-specific delegation.

Overview

Research summary

CodeWhale reads projects, edits files, executes commands and checks its work from an interactive terminal or other clients connected to the same runtime. Users can select hosted or local providers, explore in a non-mutating plan mode, then move to work mode with explicit permission policies. Larger tasks can be divided among agents with different roles and model choices, making the project relevant both as a lightweight Rust runtime and as a multi-agent execution reference.

The shared-runtime approach is relevant when a project needs several user interfaces without duplicating agent state or execution semantics. Its permission model also makes planning and mutation explicit rather than treating every model request as equally trusted. For comparative research, CodeWhale provides a compact example of how Rust ownership, asynchronous execution and client/runtime separation can be used to keep an interactive coding agent relatively lightweight while still supporting delegation.
