Overview

Research summary

Cline is an open-source coding agent whose shared core supports VS Code and JetBrains extensions, an interactive or headless CLI, desktop applications, and an SDK for custom integrations. It reads repository structure, coordinates edits across files, runs shell commands, monitors compiler or linter feedback, and can use browser and external tools. Plan mode is intended for exploration, clarification, and strategy before Act mode performs changes.

File edits and commands normally pass through human approval, although users can enable auto-approval for more autonomous execution. IDE integrations display changes as reviewable diffs, and checkpoints snapshot project state around edits and commands so code can be restored without discarding the conversation. Project rules and skills supply repository-specific conventions.

Cline supports multiple hosted and local model providers rather than requiring one vendor, while plugins, lifecycle hooks, custom tools, and MCP servers extend the agent into domain-specific systems. The CLI also supports structured, non-interactive output for scripts and CI/CD. The implementation is primarily TypeScript and is published under Apache-2.0.

External models, MCP servers, and connected services remain governed by their own licenses, credentials, security properties, and usage terms.
