Overview

Research summary

Beads gives coding agents a persistent, structured task store rather than relying entirely on conversation history or a free-form TODO file. Work items can carry dependencies and other relationships, allowing an agent to inspect what is ready, blocked, or already recorded before continuing a project. The reviewed implementation is built around Dolt, providing a versioned database foundation for task state and collaboration.

Its command-line tools make that state accessible from ordinary development workflows and across multiple agent sessions. Beads is not a model runtime or a guarantee that the agent will correctly prioritize and complete tasks; it supplies the memory and coordination substrate that the surrounding workflow uses. The Go implementation is MIT licensed, and its database setup, synchronization, and access controls remain operational concerns for the adopting team.
