Overview

Research summary

Amp is an opinionated coding agent that routes different kinds of work to a main model, specialist subagents, and smaller supporting models. Its persistent thread model spans web and terminal interfaces, while execution can occur on the local machine, an Amp-created isolated machine called an orb, or a connected runner. Built-in modes combine model routing, reasoning effort, prompts, tools, and specialist behavior for tasks of different complexity.

Subagents receive separate context windows and focused instructions; they return summaries to the main agent but cannot communicate with one another or be steered while running. The Amp product and its core implementation are proprietary. ACP support in this entry comes from the separate community amp-acp project, licensed under Apache-2.0.

That adapter launches an installed and authenticated Amp CLI through its streaming JSON interface, with an SDK transport available as a fallback. It streams messages and tool activity, carries images, forwards client MCP servers, preserves thread context within a session, and exposes Amp mode and permission configuration through ACP. The adapter does not contain or relicense Amp itself, and it cannot execute agent work without the proprietary CLI, valid credentials, and access to Amp's services.
