Coding agents
Amazon Q Developer CLI
Open Rust predecessor to Kiro CLI; useful architectural source even though active feature development has ended.
Overview
Research summary
Amazon Q Developer CLI exposes the earlier open implementation of Amazon's terminal coding agent, including the Rust crates behind the q CLI. AWS now states that active product development has moved to the closed-source Kiro CLI and that this repository will receive only critical security fixes. It remains a valuable historical source reference because the runtime, tools and terminal architecture are available under a permissive dual license.
Because the repository contains the open Rust implementation that preceded Kiro CLI, it provides a rare production-scale reference even though feature development has stopped. Historical source remains useful for studying process management, terminal integration and the packaging of an agent into multiple Rust crates. Its maintenance state must be kept explicit, however: conclusions about current Amazon product behavior should not be inferred from this code, and new integrations should target the successor rather than this frozen implementation.
