Overview
Research summary
Aider is a terminal-based AI pair programmer for making coordinated changes in new or existing codebases. Users add files to a conversation, describe an implementation or repair, and let the selected model propose and apply edits. It supports many hosted model APIs and local-model configurations, with behavior and edit reliability depending on the chosen model.
For repository-wide context, Aider builds a concise map containing important classes, functions, types, and call signatures. In large repositories it ranks dependency relationships and sends only the portions most relevant to the current conversation and token budget, so the map is selective rather than a complete copy of the codebase. Git is central to the workflow: Aider can create descriptive commits after edits, preserve pre-existing dirty changes separately, display diffs, and undo its latest change.
Automatic commits and Git integration can be disabled. It can also run configured linters and tests after changes and attempt to repair reported failures, and prompts may include images or web pages as supporting context. Aider's implementation is published in Python under Apache-2.0; external models and APIs retain their own credentials, costs, licenses, and operational limits.
