AGENTS.md

An open Markdown convention for repository instructions consumed by coding agents, with a reference website and examples rather than an agent runtime.

Overview

Research summary

AGENTS.md defines a predictable place for repository-specific instructions that coding agents can consult before working. A project can use the file to describe setup commands, tests, conventions, and other guidance that would otherwise need to be repeated in prompts. The convention is deliberately based on ordinary Markdown, so teams can review and version instructions alongside their code without adopting a particular agent framework.

This repository maintains the explanatory website and examples; it does not supply an autonomous coding agent, tool-execution engine, or security boundary. Its TypeScript implementation describes the reference website rather than a requirement for projects using AGENTS.md. Actual discovery, nesting, precedence, and enforcement depend on the client reading the files.

Repository guidance should therefore complement, not replace, tool permissions and validation.
